Kinfolk, learn to appreciate what you dislike... for me, it’s social media. Real talk, everyone who knows me has heard me say, “I don’t do social mediaaaa”💁🏾♀️ (in the voice of Wendy Williams when she’s mocking the Kardashians). And it is true, I despise it for several reasons a.) not everyone deserves private thoughts b.) understanding is more valuable then sharing & c.) at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. Allow me to explain... 🙄
First, sharing personal thoughts is not a priority; mainly, because I legit believe not every thought needs to be shared - I learned this lesson living with my grandma. Back in the day, my granny, whom I adore, would talk about me and/or anybody in the room as if they weren’t present... 🤦🏾♀️ Lawd, have mercy, you ever have an elder punk you on a regular basis like that? I ain’t deserve that, LOL! It is an honor and a rite of passage present day, but it definitely wasn’t then, which is why I understand how much words really do matter, today.
Second, changing your mind is rarely my concern because I’d rather understand... That’s right - I said and mean it: it ain’t always about me (😏 haha, yeah right). But for real, understanding another perspective is how I learn, grow & develop. And that’s important to me even though at the end of the day...
I don’t really care! 😂 Seriously. If upon understanding you I learn we think contrary to one another… so what - it is a reflection of our differences. But if on the other hand you & I both agree, I know it’s because you’re actually a smart person, so it’s a win/win situation. 😜
In all seriousness tho, my disdain for social media while very real, was actually shortsighted & limiting. Had I looked 👀 through my lens alone - which I never do as a consultant - I would have never recognized how empowering it is to share my written voice, understood the impact, nor be able to encourage others to do the same. Moreover, because I sought to move passed my comfort zone & begrudgingly posted a tweet, ‘gram & pin, I actually get it now; thus, the reason for today’s insight: Think about what it is you abhor and see if there’s any value in discovering your appreciation for it... it just might TRANSFORM your perspective & forever change how you process your thoughts & understand others.
BTW, this will be my first & last disclaimer in regard to my writing: I enjoy dry, sarcastic humor, I use emojis to counter my direct tone, I chose to write “tho” as opposed to “though “and yes I know “ain’t,” ain’t a word, stop it - it’s called VOICE. ✌🏾😘
